IMPD and the People Behind the Curtain

Heritage is made by human beings, not by magic tricks in climate-controlled rooms.

Museums have perfected the art of appearing effortless.

Objects gleam. Labels behave. Lighting flatters. Meaning arrives with the poise of a well-trained butler. One might almost believe exhibitions simply arrange themselves, assisted by scholarship and a little tasteful typography.

Not quite.

Behind every apparently seamless museum experience lies a remarkable choreography of human effort.

A registrar untangles the logistics of an international loan. A conservator determines whether a fragile object can safely travel. A technician constructs a mount the visitor is never meant to notice. A researcher questions what everyone thought they knew. An educator makes a collection intelligible to a new generation. A security officer keeps watch long after the opening-night champagne has disappeared.

And these are only a few members of an extraordinarily varied company.

The Work Behind the Wonder

The better this work is done, the less visible it often becomes.

An exhibition opens on time. A collection remains safe. A visitor discovers something unexpected. Few consider the years of study, planning, negotiation, technical expertise, and quiet problem-solving behind a single gallery.

Yet this invisibility comes at a price.

When museums are viewed merely as magnificent buildings filled with remarkable things, the professionals who sustain them risk becoming an afterthought. Their expertise, working conditions, and contributions deserve far more attention than the occasional ceremonial thank-you.

This is the conviction at the heart of International Museum Professionals Day (IMPD).

Museums are not simply repositories of the past. They are living institutions, shaped by human intelligence, imagination, collaboration, and care.

Heritage does not preserve itself. Nor does it interpret itself, protect itself, or explain why it matters.

People do.

And surely it’s time the people behind the curtain received their names on the program.
